Red Deer conference to focus on safety in education

It may not be the first profession that comes to mind when one thinks of workplace safety, but an upcoming professional conference in Red Deer will tackle the topic of safety in the educational sphere.

The event is the annual meeting of the Alberta Education Health and Safety Association. It aims to deal with concerns including psychological wellbeing, best practices in shop class and science labs, and workplace fatigue. There will also be sponsors and vendors maintaining tables throughout the two-day event. The third day will be a special training session focused on compliance with the Joint Work Site Health & Safety Committees legislation.

The AEHSA conference will be a single-track event with a mixture of keynote presentations and special activities. Presentations include “Social Media Mental Health” by web experts Joe Whitbread and Jo Phillips, “Communications With(out) Engagement” by Transmit Safety head Amimee Arsenault, and “Handling the Politics of Workplace Bullying” by motivational speaker Valerie Cade. These speakers will hope to bring practices used in the business world to Alberta’s education system. Work conferences typically provide an opportunity for networking as well as education, with local printing services often used for resumé and business card printing.

The AEHSA’s 2019 conference will take place during the days of October 8, 9 and 10 at the Black Knight Inn in Red Deer. Workers from all levels of education in Alberta are invited to register.
