Red Deer College to launch new health aide program

A new certificate program at Red Deer College will offer students for whom English is a second language (ESL) a pathway to becoming a health care aide.

The program, offered through the college’s School of Continuing Education, will be a year-long curriculum providing both language and technical skills. The first 14 weeks will consist of ESL courses to develop English reading, writing and speaking skills with an eye towards postsecondary education and a health setting. The following 36 weeks will feature academic and practical training following Alberta’s Health Care Aide Curriculum, including hands-on training in clinical placement and labs. Those that complete the program will receive RDC’s Health Care Aide Certificate.

The demand for health care aides to provide assistance to the elderly and disabled is very high within Alberta and Canada. Aides work in hospitals, care facilities and in patients’ homes to supplement the work done by doctors and nurses. The new program will join the existing health aide certificate program and other industrial programs aimed at training learners to work in areas ranging from software development to welding. Colleges typically advertise these programs through tools like brochure printing and public transit advertising aimed at attracting older or unconventional students.

Red Deer College’s ESL to Health Care Aide program will launch on March 22, with room for 16 students. Registration will be open until January 26.
