Red Deer authors nominated for Alberta Literary Awards

Fran Kimmel’s novel No Good Asking, published by America’s ECW Press, will be competing with Clem Martini’s The Comedian and Joshua Whitehead’s Johnny Appleseed for the Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction. Former Red Deer resident Leslie Greentree is also nominated, with her essay “Pink Smock Stories”, nominated for the Jon Whyte Memorial Essay Award. Greentree has published extensively in a variety of short genres, having released books of short stories and poems and being nominated for the Griffin Poetry Prize. Essays by Falon Fayant and Trina Moyles are also nominated.
The Alberta Literary Awards are an annual prize given out by the Writers’ Guild of Alberta. Regional awards such as this are a way to build literary community and help establish up-and-coming authors in a crowded book market. Authors on this level sometimes use print services to self-publish chapbooks and magazines, or use striking graphic design to make their covers stand out from the rest.
The awards ceremony will take place on June 8 in Edmonton.
