Red Deer art exhibit highlights Alberta ranch
A new photography exhibit in Red Deer features Albertan photographer Arto Djerdjerian’s images from a horse ranch in the province.
Located near Banff, Ya Ha Tinda is Canada’s only working horse ranch that is federally owned, and it covers almost 4,000 hectares of land along the Red Deer River. The photography exhibit, called “Ya Ha Tinda – The Ranch”, captures a variety of the farm’s natural life, which includes roaming animals such as elk and bears, in addition to dozens of horses year-round.
Djerdjerian, an Egyptian-born photographer who has been living and working in Alberta since 1977, aimed to capture daily life at the ranch, with promotional materials at the exhibit stating that:
The Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery provided sneak peaks at the exhibit on December 3 and 4 as part of its First Fridays and 2 O’Clock Tours programs, before a formal opening event took place on December 12. The exhibit will be accompanied by two artist talks by Djerdjerian on January 26 and 29.
Photography exhibitions such as this, which often involve the production of official art books and brochure printing, showcase the more artistic side of the common practice of photography.
Ya Ha Tinda – The Ranch is on display at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery until March 5, 2022.

“Through patient observation, Arto skillfully composes photographs that capture the workaday routine of the ranch – images that speak of gritty, hard work but also of magnificent animals and stunning natural surroundings.”
