The return edition will feature popular author and University of Alberta Professor of Health Law & Science Policy Timothy Caulfield. Caulfield’s talk, titled “Relax: A Guide to Life in the Age of Misinformation”, will be on the subject of factors that influence individuals’ daily decisions and how these decisions can affect physical and mental health. Caulfield has previously written several Books on health and culture for a general audience and is the co-producer of the Netflix documentary “A User’s Guide to Cheating Death”.
In a statement, History Instructor and Chair of the Perspectives Committee Jeff Wigglesworth stressed the importance of the series as public intellectual outreach:
“Perspectives is an opportunity for the Red Deer and central Alberta communities to hear world-renowned speakers address timely topics that are of interest to all Albertans.”
In its original edition, the series has included authors and public figures ranging from Margaret Atwood to Roméo Dallaire. Universities often host author talks and public speaking events aimed at both the student body and the broader community, typically advertised through flyer printing on campus and broader social media outreach.
The Perspectives event with Timothy Caulfield will take place at the RDP Arts Centre on the Red Deer Polytechnic campus on January 26.
