New event to highlight Caribbean culture in Red Deer

This November will see the debut of the Afro Caribbean Cultural Event in Red Deer, which aims to become an annual celebration of Afro Caribbean culture in Central Alberta.

The evening will feature a variety of musical performances, including the Edmonton-based Veritas band and singer-songwriters Dean Ray and Chura Montgomery. There will also be a sample of global dance, with Martha Elena Cortes Polo performing a Colombian routine, and youth and adult Cameroon dancers in attendance. The event will also feature Dr. Love Nwigwe, founder of Red Deer’s International Women of Purpose Cultural Association, as keynote speaker, and Alberta businesswoman Rochelle Ignacio as the Master of Ceremonies. Afro Caribbean food will be available throughout the night.

The Cultural Event is hosted by the African Caribbean Centre of Central Alberta, a newly-formed group aiming to promote cultural awareness and education, as well as promoting information on mental health, legal resources, and employment to members of the Afro Caribbean community. The group aims to raise money through the event to create a permanent organizational presence, including through a silent auction and sponsorship opportunities. Cultural events such as this, featuring global inspiration in everything from music to graphic design, are popular annual occasions in many cities.

The first Afro Caribbean Cultural Event is set to take place on November 18 at Cultural Hall. The group also plans to hold an Afro-Caribbean Festival next August.
