Miniature Shakespeare coming to Red Deer locations
Red Deer’s Prime Stock Theatre is looking to make the work of Shakespeare more accessible – in more ways than one.
Its new initiative, called “Bard in the Box”, sees abridged versions of two of the playwright’s comedies performed in various public locations. The goal is both to present the English language’s most prestigious author in a relaxed atmosphere, and to build anticipation for the company’s full-sized productions during the summer
The two plays to be featured are A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors. Venues include the Kerry Wood Nature Centre this Saturday, July 20, and the Revera Aspen Ridge on August 1. Prior shows at Westpark and Barrett Park have already received high acclaim.
Local theatre companies often put on outdoor shows in the summer, which carry the risk of inclement weather but enhance the atmosphere, particularly for plays like the woods-set Dream. These small-scale theatre groups often use local print shops for program and poster printing.
For those looking for a meatier Shakespeare experience, Prime Stock will be putting on full productions of The Tempest and Macbeth on the main stage at Bower Ponds from July 25 to July 31. The company has been putting on this series, called “The Bard on the Bower”, since 2010, along with occasional other productions in the area.
