Learn about the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance

The Red Deer River Watershed Alliance’s Watershed Ambassador Program holds a monthly breakfast meeting to educate the public about the Caring for our Watersheds program; they especially welcome teachers whom they hope will pass what they learn to their students. The next meeting will be held at the Quality Inn North Hill on December 16 from 7:30-8:45 am. Admission is $12 and attendees must pre-register.

The breakfast meeting will consist of a buffet breakfast and presentations from Nathalie Stanley the program director and Ryszard Kozlowski from the City of Red Deer Environmental Services. The finalists for the Watership Ambassador Award will be announced at this meeting.

The Red Deer River Watershed Alliance is a non-profit organization which exists to “highlight watershed management issues” in Red Deer and the surrounding area. A watershed has been describes as a “giant sponge” which absorbs rainwater and runoff, sending it off larger bodies of water. It is important that we learn how to ensure that the water that does run off is as clean as possible and does not contain any pollutants.

Printing companies in Red Deer are concerned about the environment as well. Most printers have switched to natural inks, recycled papers and energy-friendly machinery in order to prevent damage to the environment. These environmentally friendly practices help to ensure that the watershed “sponge” will not absorb chemicals that can be passed into the water that we depend on to survive. Programs such as the Watershed Ambassador Program help to ensure that we will continue to protect our environment.
