E-scooter program comes to Red Deer
A new pilot program has been announced for this summer that will see electronic scooters available for rentals on Red Deer streets.
The program will see Red Deer host fleets of e-scooters from Alberta companies that can be rented for a small cost by users. Users can leave their scooter around the city, where it can be rented again by someone with the associated mobile application.
There may be discounts available to incentivize leaving the scooter at a designated site, and pick-up sites in Red Deer could include the Collicutt and Bower Ponds. Each scooter is GPS trackable and has lockable wheels. The program is modeled after similar initiatives from Edmonton and Calgary, the latter of which has already been made permanent.
The e-scooter pilot program was approved by the Red Deer city council after its first reading. Administrators will now figure out how to implement the program in the city, including bylaw changes to allow for the use of the scooters on sidewalks and trails.
Red Deer will be looking for feedback across the three summers of the trial program. Programs like these often use tools like brochure printing and online surveys to communicate with the public, inform them of the new initiatives and gauge their opinion.
The Red Deer e-scooter program is set to run between July 1 and October 31, with future trials planned for the summers of 2022 and 2023.
