Trickle down industries in Edmonton say business pouring in

Business and services in Edmonton that ride the tide along with the province’s tumultuous oil industry are forecasting good times ahead.

Restaurants and bars, which in turn keep Print companies in Edmonton busy rolling off Menus, table cards and Posters, say they haven’t been as busy as they are for several months.

Edmonton restaurant supplier Larry Ungarian says he’s not an economist, but in looking at the orders coming in for local eateries as well as remote camps in Northern Alberta which feed oilpatch workers, he believes the province is on an upswing. Ungarian says in the last two to three months, he hasn’t been busier.

"The more they order means the more people that are here and the more restaurants grow,"

says Ungarian, who operates Hotel Equipment and Supply Co., a 90-year-old business, with son Adam. The business outfits kitchens with everything from chef’s hats to glasses for shooters. He and his son also offer consulting services, specializes in redeveloping and refreshing existing restaurants to stay ahead of trends and the competition. The father-son team also consult companies and entrepreneurs in the food and beverage industry, helping them design new projects, create new Menus, logos and branding, plus advising them on opportunities to keep costs down and stay “green”.

"We provide everything except the booze and the food,"

he says.

According to Statistics Canada, food and beverage sales in Alberta rose 5.8 per cent in December 2010 over October 2009, with sales of $568.5 million. The figures demonstrate returning consumer confidence and a growth of disposable income in Alberta, and are good news for printing services in Edmonton, as restaurants turn to them for new Menus and Flyers.
