Local student campaigning for new Edmonton flag

A movement has begun to revamp Edmonton’s flag, and city residents are being invited to have their say in what the new design should look like.

Local architecture student, Alexander Chubocha, has started to get the word out that he would like to ask the mayor and city council to change the current design for the standard, and he hopes that people from throughout the city will get on board.

To this end, he has begun a letter writing campaign, and is asking the public to give their input as to what elements they feel would best represent Edmonton and should be used on a new flag.

The new look proposed by Chubocha would be streamlined and bold, with symbols that are easy to recognize when the flag is flying high above. Symbols include a purple mountain in the background above a green plain and blue wave of water.
If successful, it’s possible that existing Promotional Products with the old Edmonton flag could become collectors’ items in years to come.

The design that is currently in use is about 20 years old, and includes the city’s coat of arms, as well as a representation of the goddess Athena and also a winged wheel. These represent the importance of knowledge at the University of Alberta and the aviation history of the area.
