Edmontons green spaces set for improvements

The excitement is building in Edmonton as the council begins to act on its plans to renovate the area’s green spaces.

Edmonton’s River Valley parks and trail systems are enjoyed thoroughly by members of the public and with the ongoing infrastructure improvements set for completion by the end of 2016, their popularity is set to grow even further.

The updates have already begun at Tiger Goldtsick Park, where the trails are being given new gravel surfaces and park benches and railings are being installed. Improved signage, which has been provided by reputable printing companies, is also being erected. It is hoped that this will make the park more accessible to families.

The enhancements are part of an overall initiative to make the green areas of the city more user-friendly. As part of the program, a 260ft footbridge will be built in Terwilliger Park. Trails in the west end will be increased by 5km, while those in the east will grow by 14km. New boat launches and docks are also being built on the park’s rivers and lakes.

One of the biggest highlights is set to be the new Touch the Water promenade, which will bring new facilities and services to the area around the Waterdale Bridge.

The final price tag for the improvements will be around $72.9m, with funding provided by the region’s organizations and the local, provincial, and federal governments. It is hoped that the changes will help to make Edmonton one of Canada’s premier cities in which to live and do business.
