Edmonton Valley Zoos newest residents meet the public for the first time

Edmonton Valley Zoo has some new residents, and they are attracting a lot of attention from the public and those interested in wildlife conservation.

The facility recently welcomed three newborn red pandas into the world. These tiny babies spent the first weeks of their life in a nesting box, but they are old enough now to meet the public.

Like youngsters of many species, these pandas are very active, and enjoy climbing, wrestling with each other and exploring their new world.

A naming contest was held to name the oldest of the group, and the one chosen was Tango, which was submitted by Janaya, Rowen and Alex Miyashita. The younger two pandas have not been named yet. A printer can include photos or other graphics of the babies on T-Shirts and other promotional items that can be sold to the public. These not only help to support the zoo, but they also spread awareness about the species.

According to the zoo, conservationists are delighted with their new arrivals. Red panda numbers have been dropping, and they are considered an endangered species. They are native to China and the eastern Himalayas, and it is believed that there are fewer than 10,000 left in the wild today. This means that each new baby plays an important role in the continuation of the species.
