Edmonton Stuff a Bus campaign a success

The Stuff a Bus campaign which was held at 13 Save-On Foods locations in Edmonton from December 1-3 raised approximately 20,000 kg of food and $14,000 in donations for the Edmonton Food Bank. The food donation equalled 14 city buses packed with food and is enough to feed 400 families for a month.

The Stuff a Bus campaign has been in existence since 1995 and has raised 302,545 kg of food and over $300,000. Other communities have taken Edmonton’s lead and had similar drives. This type of campaign is only one way in which food banks raise donations. Another way is through Direct Mail; for example, the food bank works with a local flyer printing business to create a flyer which will be sent to each citizen’s mailbox or will be inserted in local newspapers. Many also include a brown paper bag in which people can place food in and drop off at their local fire house or city hall.

The Edmonton Food Bank’s mission is to create a city “where all citizens have access to an adequate and nutritious supply of food.” The food bank supplies over 300,000 meals and snacks every month and 40% of their clients are under 18.

The food bank also receives donations of food that cannot be sold in stores. These donations come from grocery stores, distribution centers and warehouses. Some also comes from local farmers and growers. All in all, 70% of their donations come from what they call these “gleanings.”
