Edmonton residents reminded of vaccination importance

It will soon be time for spring break for Edmonton students, and Alberta Health Services wants them to make sure that they are up to date with their measles vaccines.

According to the AHS Officer of Health for the Edmonton area Joanna Oda, there has been an active outbreak of measles in the USA, and she wants to make sure that travelers are protected. She has sent letters to parents, school administrators, and staff letting them know about the risk and how being properly vaccinated can provide protection.

According to Ms. Oda, those who have received the proper dosages of the MMR vaccine can have up to 99% protection against catching the disease, which is highly contagious. If traveling, those between six months and six years of age may need to have their schedule adjusted, while those born after 1970 should get two doses of the vaccine and those born before 1970 should get one.

Anyone wishing to check their vaccination status who has lived in the area for some time can do so by contacting their community health centre or calling Health Link Alberta. Those who have moved to the area can check with their former healthcare providers.

Making people aware of the importance of being properly vaccinated can be achieved effectively through the use of Posters, Flyers, and pamphlets produced by brochure printers.
