Edmonton kids learn how to protect themselves in case of fire

Some Edmonton students recently had a chance to learn more about fire safety right from a group of fire-fighting professionals.

A grade one class from Westglen School was invited to pay a visit to Fire Station Number Five, where firefighters gave them a lesson in what to do in the event of an emergency. They were given tools to help them escape safely in case they should ever find themselves caught in a burning building.

An obstacle course had been set up by the City of Edmonton’s Office of Emergency Management. The students had to navigate the course, including a portion where they had to wriggle their way through a canvas tunnel to help them learn to stay low to avoid dangerous smoke.

The kids also got a lesson in what to do should their clothing ever catch fire. They all had a chance to practice the ‘stop drop and roll’ procedure that they had been taught. A Stationery printing firm can work with the fire services to create materials that can help kids and their families to learn more.

Along with the more serious topics, the children had a chance to get a closer look at the firefighters’ equipment and even try some of it on for themselves. They also got to inspect the fire trucks.
