A grass roots campaign will soon be adding a little extra sparkle to the night time sky in Edmonton.
For the past several months, Light the Bridge has been raising funds to purchase lighting equipment that will be used to decorate Edmonton’s High Level Bridge. It had set a goal of generating $3 million and recently announced that it has already surpassed the $2 million mark.
Dave Mowat, CEO of ATB financial, was one of the major driving forces behind the campaign and spoke for the group when he thanked area residents and businesses for their generosity and help to make the dream a reality.
He also had some good news to share when he explained that it may actually cost less to complete the project than first thought. The final tally may be closer to 2.5 million, which would mean the end is in sight.
The reasons for the actual cost being lower than expected include the fact that there is more competition to provide the bulbs and better and cheaper LED technology has become available.
The final price tag for the project will be released in the next two weeks. After that, the lights will be ordered with the installation process set to begin in the spring. The city is working with EPCOR to decide the best way to install the lights.
The LEDs will light the night with changing patterns and colors, and will help to mark the centennial year of this historic landmark. It will create a tourist attraction and will make excellent subject matter for any local company that offers postcard printing services.
