Albertas flu shot campaign underway

The residents of Edmonton are being encouraged to sign up for flu vaccines as part of an annual Alberta Health Services campaign.

The initiative, which kicked off last week, sees a number of doctor’s offices, pharmacies, and walk-in clinics across the city providing the extra treatments. Special flu shot clinics have also been set up as part of the scheme.

The vaccine will be available in both injectable and nasal spray versions, and is free of charge for those over six months of age. Anyone working, living in or going to school in the province is eligible to access this program. It can even be given as part of a child’s routine immunization schedule.

Since the predominant influenza strains change from year to year, it is very important that everyone who can get the shot does so. This year, it protects against two type A strains and as well as one type B. All of these Forms of the illness can be dangerous and lead to serious complications. In the last flu season, 930 people across the province were hospitalized. It is hoped that if more people protect themselves this year, that number will be much lower.

More than 75 per cent of Alberta residents didn’t get immunized last year, and the AHS has launched a $600,000 public awareness campaign to help reduce this number. The program includes television ads, a website and other promotional methods. Printing companies could also be called upon to provide eye-catching Posters and Flyers to raise awareness
