Film on Calgary humanitarian a hit

For some people, helping others is a true calling and can become the main focus of their life’s work. For Calgary resident Ashid Bahl, this is true to such an extent that he has become the subject of an award-winning film.

A film company recently produced ‘For the Love of Children’, which documents Bahl and the work of his organization, from which the film takes its name. It has proved to be an inspiring hit and it won several top awards at the 2013 Monaco Film Festival last month, scooping the prize for best film, best feature documentary, and also the grand prize Angel Award for best picture.

As a child growing up in Kenya, Bahl learned about the importance of helping others when he would share his lunch with his friends less fortunate than himself. When he became an adult and immigrated to Canada, he kept up with his goal of trying to make the world a better place.

In 1980, he formed the Calgary based not for profit group For the Love of Children, with the mandate of helping children living through disasters and other unfortunate situations, both locally and around the world. The idea took root and the group has grown to include over 2,000 volunteers and other supporters.

Along with its work helping children in crisis, the organization also funds 76 schools and orphanages in developing countries around the globe. Print companies can help such groups in their work by producing materials that encourage others to spare their time and money.
