A Calgary island that is home to a lively nighttime scene is set to welcome a guided visit, and this activity is open to all ages.
St. Patrick’s Island’s nocturnal life will be explored by attendees of the Bat and Moth Night Nature Season event set for late July. It is being organized and facilitated by Nature Calgary, and tickets are $6.50 each.
The session will begin at 10:00 pm, and it will provide a sneak peek into the lives of the area’s resident bats and moths. There will be a light station set up to attract and capture moths and other insects for observation before they are released back into the darkness. There will be bat detectors as well, and these devices can pick up the high frequency sounds they make. Local bat species will be discussed, and those attending are invited to bring a flashlight and a light jacket. Insect repellent is also strongly recommended. Only dogs that are medically necessary will be permitted.
Learning about nature can be fun at any age, and a guided walk or workshop provides a chance to do so. Stationery printers can supply printed Copies of the information shared and safety instructions so that those who are hearing impaired may also join in.
