Calgary classes to prepare traditional Chinese treats

Calgary is very proud of its Chinese culture and food, and a traditional dish from China will be the focus of a hands-on culinary class that will be on offer this autumn.

The city will be running its Mid-Autumn Festival, and as part of the festivities it will be hosting the Sweet Rice Ball Workshop. The Chinese Cultural Centre has made arrangements to host the sessions, and spaces will be filled first come, first served.

The activity will teach how to prepare sweet rice balls (tangyuan) by hand, a traditional treat often served during the Mid-Autumn Festival. While they work, everyone can learn more about other activities and foods that are part of the celebration. There are two session times to choose from, and both run for two hours. The fee to secure a seat is $10.00, and additional financial support has been provided by the Government of Alberta.

Food is an important part of many cultural celebrations, and a culinary workshop shares these traditions with those who are interested. Organizers can have recipe cards and other materials prepared in advance to hand out to the participants, and Stationery printers will be happy to help.

The Sweet Rice Ball Workshop sessions will take place on September 15th. The start times are 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm at 197 1st Street SW in Calgary’s Chinatown.
