Clara Hughes makes a stop in Calgary

All too often, mental health issues carry a stigma along with them, but during a stop at Calgary’s Canada Sport’s Hall of Fame, Clara Hughes sought to make a difference.

This Olympic athlete, who won several medals, is currently riding across the country as part of “Clara’s Big Ride” to raise awareness about depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns.

During her stop in Calgary, she noted that, as someone who has battled depression in her own life, she understands the challenge that it can be. She also understands that many may be reluctant to seek help because they may see it is appearing weak, and they are ashamed to do so. She wants this to change.

Her 7,250km ride has taken her across the country. She remarked that many people have come out to support her and share their own stories about how mental health issues have affected them. Though it’s been a long and difficult journey, it has provided her with a lot of inspiration.

Her ride will end in Ottawa on Canada Day.

An effort like this can really help to raise awareness and remove the stigma that surrounds mental illness. It’s also important to share information about it with the public, and brochure printers can help; they can produce pamphlets that let people know about these conditions – and as Clara Hughes found out, that it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help.
