Calgary Zoo holds its own march of the penguins

A group of Calgary residents recently waddled their way out into the cold, much to the delight of the crowd of onlookers. They’ll keep going

for their daily walk until spring, so long as the weather doesn’t get too frosty.

The walkers in question were the small flock of King Penguins who call the Calgary zoo home. Every morning in winter, they come out for their daily walk, and the public is invited to come and enjoy the chance to see them up close for themselves.

The birds are given the choice of whether or not they want to come out. If it’s too cold, or if they simply don’t feel like it, they are allowed to “stay at home”.

The public is invited to come to see the penguins on their walk each morning at 11 a.m. They will be doing so each day until March. Ad specialties such as T-Shirts are frequently used by zoos and other attractions, for the public to buy, for instance featuring the birds on their winter march. These can raise funds to help provide for their care.

This “march of the penguins” has been a regular occurrence since 2013. The curator who plans the bird’s care, Doctor Malu Celli, remarked that they seem to enjoy the chance for the extra exercise, and can often be found ready and waiting for their carer to open the gate so they can get started.
