A new lawyer in town is working to set up an association that caters for Asian law professionals in Calgary.
Steven Ngo, who holds a position at Osler, Haskin and Harcourt, has recently moved to the city from the Vancouver area. While he was practicing in that city, he was a member of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL), and he and a friend decided to work together and start a chapter here.
He will be working with his friend Beverly Ma, who is set to move to the city to practice law as well.
The FACL works to promote opportunity, justice and equality, and is open to Asian legal professionals, though they don’t need to be lawyers to join.
So far, 121 people have joined the group and a conference is planned for later this month to be held at the University of Calgary. A printing company will be able to provide any of the printed materials that are needed for such a large meeting.
Starting in May, there will be a series of speaker sessions.
The group plans on becoming involved in the community and engaging in advocacy, as well as promoting scholarships and professional development among its members. Anyone seeking further information can contact the organization.
In addition to his activities as a legal professional, Ngo is also a musician, working with an organisation called Healing Using Music, or HUM.
