Calgary residents to be given access to free influenza vaccine

Alberta Health Services has made a decision that will make flu shots a whole lot more available to people living in Calgary.

After last year’s shortage of doses of the flu vaccine for both health care workers and the public, the province has ordered two million doses and hopes that as much as 45 percent of the population will choose to be vaccinated.

Every year, people with influenza require medical treatment, which can overwhelm the health care system. The vaccine can help to reduce the administrative and financial strain by reducing the number of hospitalizations and even deaths due to the disease.

It’s also hoped that 80 percent of health care workers will get the shot, as this will help to reduce both sick time and transmission of the flu to the people they treat. Right now, being immunized is voluntary.

The flu vaccine will be available free of charge at clinics throughout the city, as well as many pharmacies and doctors’ offices.

A media blitz, with the theme “Get it before You Need It” has begun to help spread the word about the program. Ads are already running on buses and in bus stops. A printing company can really help to make an ad campaign like this work, as it would be able to help design promotional materials and Print them in whatever format is required.
