The Calgary Alzheimer’s Society’s recent Thanksgiving Walk and Run has been labelled a success after more than 2,000 people turned up to get involved.
The day’s weather kept everyone in good spirits, with music being played across the course. Near to the starting line, there was a ‘memory lane’, where participants were able to place pictures and messages of loved ones they had lost to the disease.
The main corporate sponsor for the day was Investors Group, but there were many other companies which offered their support as well.
One of the stand-out features of the day was the fact that people were rewarded for their support. There were gift cards for the Chinook mall, and for those who raised over $10,000, there was something extra special. They were treated to a wine and cheese reception, and their names were automatically entered into a draw for a mini vacation.
Those who took part wore T-Shirts and race bibs to show their support. Local printing companies often lend a helping hand by offering their services to such events; flyer and poster printing can be useful when organizing such large crowds of people.
It was the 23rd year for the walk, and while the figure is yet to be calculated, it is hoped that $300,000 has been raised. The Alzheimer’s Society will use the money to help fund its programs and services.
The Society estimates that for every person with the illness, 10-12 others are impacted, and receiving support can make coping with the condition much easier.
