Sneak peek at new Calgary CTrains

Calgary will be getting some new CTrains, and reporters from the local area were recently given a sneak peek at the new vehicles.

The award winning design, nicknamed “the mask”

drew inspiration from the mask a hockey goalkeeper wears. They will be replacing the fleet of U2 cars, most of which have reached the end of their projected 34 year long life span. The new trains will be able to carry an additional 200 passengers on each trip.

The new vehicles have a lot of features that are intended to make for a more comfortable ride, complete with new air conditioning, heated floors, comfortable seating and more interior space. The doors are all wheelchair accessible. The visual displays also include braille for those who are visually impaired and information that may be of use to the passengers will be displayed on video monitors.

Along with the new trains, destination Signs with four sides will be introduced at the stations, so that those waiting for their train to arrive will find it easier to read them, no matter where they might be standing.

In all, 63 of these vehicles have been ordered from Siemens Canada, with the first of the four car trains set to arrive in the city sometime this spring. The rest are scheduled to arrive at regular intervals until the first part of 2017.
