There are lots of plant options available for Calgary gardeners, and native species will soon be the stars of the show.
The Fish Creek Speaker Series has a session set for mid-April that will explore the choices when it comes to native plants , as well as their benefits. Mathis Natvik will share his expertise, and while it's free for Fish Creek members, a small fee will be charged to the general public.
Mathis will introduce tips for designing a garden centred on native species, and he will explain the importance of factors such as light levels and microclimates. Next, it will be time to discuss species and cultivar selection, and everyone will learn how to choose the right plant for a purpose. Ideas for pleasing combinations of plants as well as choosing types that attract wildlife are on the agenda along with sourcing advice, and the session will wrap up with a review of long-term management practices and other cultural concerns.
Even in urban and suburban areas, many people would like to find a way to invite nature in. Selecting native species provides a way to do so, and a printer can supply lists of species to choose from as well as sheets of horticultural tips and themed Promotional Products to distribute.
This opportunity to discover just how great gardening with native species can be set to begin at 7:00 pm on April 16th. Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre will be the venue for the event.
