Calgary class takes sting out of nettles

While many may have experienced the sting that nettles can cause, they may not know they are valuable plants that can be used in a variety of ways, and an upcoming Calgary class will provide a deep dive into this herb.

The “Getting to Know Nettles” workshop will explore nettles and how they can be used to create an assortment of environmentally friendly products. It will be hands-on, and the Scandinavian Centre located at 739 20 Avenue Northwest will be welcoming the registrants.

The first part will introduce how nettles, which are very fibrous, can be used to create materials such as cordage thread and yarn, and everyone will get to give the techniques used a try. The second will explore how nettles can be used for food and to produce herbal tisanes. There will be tips shared for growing them in an herb garden, and each learner will go home with a packet of nettle seeds they can grow at home.

Growing edible herbs at home combines horticulture with culinary skills, and more people are discovering the joys that can go hand in hand with the practice. Customized promotional products for a workshop like this can be ordered from local print professionals.

This opportunity to learn how to take the sting out of working with nettles will be on offer on February 17th. More details are available on its Eventbrite listing.
