Wangara, Western Australia residents will be among many people to benefit from the construction of a new Surf Life Saving Club and facilities in the area.
A $500,000 grant from Lotterywest, which was recently presented by WA Premier Colin Barnett to the Mayor of Wanneroo, Tracey Roberts, will be put towards the establishment of the club at Yanchep Beach Lagoon.
According to Mayor Roberts, the $6.9m project will also include new beach access ramps, car park and beach viewing tower.
The Mayor said much hard work by both Surf Life Saving WA and the City of Wanneroo had gone into making the club a reality, and she applauded the efforts of volunteers, club members and its president, who organised flyer printing and fundraisers to help raise money.
She said the large contribution by Lotterywest has played a vital part in the development of the project, which she described as an “important community facility” that would continue to service the fast-growing population of the north coastal corridor for a long time to come.
Yanchep beach is among the busiest in Perth’s metropolitan area and, according to Premier Barnett, further growth in popularity is expected.
He said the new facility, expected to begin construction in 2016, would not only improve beach safety but also provide a spacious venue to host social activity and training, as well as encourage new members to join the club.
