First stage of sports facility underway

Students from Wangara and throughout the City of Wanneroo stand to benefit from the construction of playing fields adjacent to two schools in the city's north.

It was announced recently that work had begun on building new sporting facilities at Halesworth Park. The move followed the awarding of a $7.8 million construction contract to RJ Vincent & Co.

The ovals, which will form an important aspect of a major $20.7m facility for sporting enthusiasts, had originally been proposed for completion to coincide with the opening of Alkimos College earlier this year.

However, concerns over the removal of foraging habitat in relation to Carnaby's black cockatoos, which are classified as endangered, delayed the process of obtaining a site clearing permit. It is now expected that the southern oval will be completed in early 2021, while the northern oval has a finishing date around next March.

The major sports facilities have been designed in conjunction with key stakeholders and according to a council report, public consultation undertaken in 2015 indicated great support for the master plan from user groups, sports clubs and residents. Such consultations often include the display of a graphic design of the planned development.

The plans revealed the inclusion of the ovals as well as a playground, parking, floodlighting, eight hard courts for netball and tennis and two buildings providing sports amenities. Further funding is expected to be allocated in the city's next two budgets for completion of the entire project.
