The opening address will be given by Germaine Greer who is, ‘one of the world’s most influential thinkers.’ The topic of the opening address is ‘Earth mothers on the march: eco-feminism then and now. The program notes about the address say:
“Women and the natural world have both been subjected to a long history of domination, but the stark reality of the environmental challenges we face has brought a new relevance and urgency to eco-feminism’s call to restructure the power balance that still dominates our culture.”
The address will be followed by the Opening party where attendees can meet writers presenting at the festival this year. The festival will be attracting readers and writers from all over Perth as far away as Welshpool.
Another event on offer is The 14th Tale, written and performed by Inua Ellams, was the winner of the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and this year he will be bringing his free-flowing narrative to the Perth Writers Festival. Ellams said:
“…tells the hilarious exploits of a mischief maker who grew up on the clay streets of Nigeria, the rooftops of Dublin and finally landed in London. Ellams, vividly recreates the characters that punctuated his upbringing in a deft and beautiful poetry, while exploring what it is to be young, black and male in London today.”
Other guest writers of the Festival include: Tom Keneally, Frank Moorhouse, Marieke Hardy and Michael Robotham.
The Perth Writers Festival will be held in the grounds of the University of Western Australia and runs from the 10th February to the 3rd March.
