Memorial event planned for Cannington

A civic hub in the city of Cannington has unveiled its plans to honour this year’s Anzac Day.

In partnership with the Returned and Services League’s (RSL) Canning subbranch, the city will host a morning of special events to commemorate the brave soldiers of Australia and New Zealand who fought for their countries and those of others.

Planners of memorial events like this one sometimes order signage from local banner printing services featuring important symbols, like the rosemary closely associated with Anzac Day. The Mediterranean herb grows wild in Gallipoli, Turkey, where Australia and New Zealand’s soldiers tirelessly fought for eight months in World War I. Each year, Anzac Day marks the anniversary of this first campaign.

The upcoming autumn event will feature hymns, musical performances and a wreath laying ceremony, and refreshments will be served afterwards.

Set up in 1916, the RSL is Australia’s largest ex-service organisation, committed to supporting former and current members of the Australian Defence Force and their families. With more than150,000 members, it provides advocacy, welfare and mental health support while holding commemorative annual events like Anzac Day.

The Anzac Day March and Service will take place in and around the Civic Amphitheatre and Gardens in Cannington on Saturday, April 25. The event begins at 7.45 am and is scheduled to finish at 10 am.
