Trial production of high purity alumina (HPA) has kicked off in Welshpool as part of an extended pilot study. The study is being run by a collaboration between aluminium sector companies FYI Resources Ltd and Alcoa.
Located at the FYI Resources pilot plant, the trial marks the second joint study by the companies, and it has been designed to demonstrate improvements to the production process, track environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) standards associated with production and generate HPA in bulk for potential customers to assess.
The trial is in advance of what may become a long-term joint venture between the two entities to collaborate on HPA production for the global market. A final investment decision on a joint venture company is expected around 2023. Logo Design can form part of a distinct identity for joint venture companies.
Due to its unique characteristics and chemical properties, HPA is increasingly sought-after as an input to the manufacture of high-tech products and is expected to see increased demand as electric vehicle and static energy storage markets develop. HPA production efforts are said to align with the state government’s Future Battery Industry Strategy, which aims to build a world-class industry that can support local jobs and regional communities.
To mark the opening of the current phase one trial, Bill Johnston, the Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Energy and Corrective Services, along with representatives of the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation toured the pilot plant while in operation.
