Wattle Grove retirement village community centre opened

A new community centre has been opened which will give residents of Wattle Grove retirement village a much needed meeting place. The retirement village serves a rapidly growing residential area which includes East Cannington, Welshpool, Forrestfield and Orange Grove.

Community groups which rely on flyer printing to make announcements to local residents will now have another popular venue with a community noticeboard to display their leaflets.

There was opposition from some members of the community when the centre was first suggested. The Mayor of Cootamundra Shire, Doug Phillips, said that approving the centre’s development was obviously the correct decision. Speaking of the retirement village’s developer, Geoff Hart, the Mayor told the crowd at the opening that it was exciting to see someone from outside the town putting their own money into such a project.

Geoff Hart complimented the village’s residents on their enthusiasm and support for their community, saying:

“Our residents are an unbelievable group of people, they are second to none, they are always helping me in any way they can.”

The Federal member for Hume, Alby Schultz, and member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson, attended the opening ceremony for the centre. Mr Schultz congratulated the local council for the efficient way it dealt with the centre’s development application. He said:

“You have a council that’s very proactive in making decisions and promoting development.”

Mr Schultz commended Mr Hart and the retirement village manager, Julie Palmer, for the fantastic venue where residents, their families and friends can socialise together. Ms Hodgkinson described the occasion as a “wonderful happy day”.
