Tour of recycling facility coming up

A tour of the Welshpool e-waste recycling facility will be coming up later in October.

The tour is open to residents of the wider city of Perth and aims to shed some light on how e-waste is recycled and why it is important to keep it out of landfill.

Australians purchase more than 2.4 million computers every year and are among the highest users of new technology in the world. Old televisions, computers and other devices break down, are superseded and quickly discarded. This creates the potential for large amounts of waste that can end up as landfill and is an increasing problem.

The one and a half hour tour aims to educate participants on the correct way to dispose of electronic waste and how best to remove data prior to disposal. Brochure printing may be an effective way to create informative material for visitors of events like this.

Computers are ideally placed to be recycled due to their large volume. They also contain non-renewable resources which can easily be recovered, such as tin, nickel, zinc and copper. Material recovered from e-waste will be visible to participants during the tour and there will be a discussion on what happens in the recycling process.

Participants are asked to wear enclosed shoes as well as long trousers throughout the tour. High-vis vests and protective gear will be provided.

The tour is free and will be held on Thursday 31st October at 3pm.
