Sun shines on solar power in Welshpool homes

Welshpool, Western Australia has entered the State’s top 10 solar postcodes.

The suburb in Perth’s southeast was joined by Gidgegannup in the north and Dardenup near Bunbury being named in the WA top 10 for the first time.

According to a report issued by the WA Greens, the switch to solar was growing throughout the state, with recent Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showing 180,000 households in WA had installed solar panels. This represented a 20% increase during the past 12 months.

The report revealed the boost in solar use in Welshpool was duplicated in areas such as Cockburn, Willetton, Canning Vale, Wanneroo and Mandurah that were all among the Nation’s Top 20.

For the second consecutive year, the state’s top postcode was Baldivis near Rockingham, where brochure printing methods used to advertisesolar systems have been very successful, with solar panels having been installed in 40% of properties.

Separate analysis also revealed the biggest solar power uptake during the past year was recorded in Wheat belt locations, including Pingaring and Yealering.

A spokesman for the Greens said the reliance on the sun for energy was experiencing an upward trend, with figures for suburbs listed in the nation’s top 20 postcodes representing a 1 in 3 ratio for homes that were now hosting solar panels. A decade ago, the ratio was 1 in approximately 100.
