Students to experience 5G technology on campus

Welshpool students attending nearby Curtin University will have an opportunity to use the latest 5G technology as part of a new telecommunications partnership with Optus.

Set to assist in progressing research into the cutting-edge technology, the joint move is also expected to provide benefits for research, learning and teaching on campus.

A spokesperson for Curtin University said the technology will enable the connection of more devices at once. In addition, it will improve upload and download speeds and enhance immersive and virtual learning and teaching experiences.

According to the spokesperson, students are set to experience the combination of 4G and 5G technology working together and bringing with it close to real-time connection, greater bandwidth and faster speeds. He added:

“In a practical sense increased speeds will bring students and staff closer to a seamless experience when dealing with video-based content.”

It is anticipated the 5G research lab based on campus will provide industry partners and students with the chance to solve problems, build skills and to support sensory experiences in real time.

The innovative 5G technology has the potential to touch many industries ranging from education, health and mining to printing services. The research, according to the spokesperson, will be propelled by problems each industry may face that may be assisted by 5G.

Initially this is expected to include remote operations, robotics and video analytics.
