Special events planned to help city celebrate 150 years

Local government in the City of Canning has reached a milestone 150 years in 2021, and to celebrate in style, the city has arranged a year-long celebration to be enjoyed by all its residents, including those in Welshpool.

Mayor of Canning Patrick Hall said the sesquicentennial celebrations aim to showcase the community, adding:

“To commemorate the City of Canning’s 150th year in 2021, we have put together a wonderful year-long programme of community events and I encourage our community to join us in celebrating the people and places that make Canning so unique.”

Flyer printing campaigns often help to advertise major events such as those involved in the 150th anniversary celebrations.

Hall said the special anniversary was an ideal time to tell some of the unique stories about Canning, ranging from its indigenous heritage and colonial past to the area's emergence as an economic powerhouse and proud multicultural community.

In addition to upcoming events, such as WA Day fireworks, Heritage Week and Youth Fest, the city will be showcasing some of its great people, as well as stories of the past. It will also recognise those who have gone the extra mile to assist within the community. The stories will be available online on the Connect in Canning website.

A collection of historic pictures can also be accessed via Our City, Our Story. The mayor encourages anyone with something to add to the collection to email photographs to the council.
