Welshpool residents will have an opportunity to increase their understanding and usage of social media at a special series of workshops for parents in January.
Perth-based 3103 Communications has initiated the event, which aims to help parents understand both the benefits and risks associated with the use of sites like Facebook, Twitter, Vine, YouTube and Instagram.
Despite an ongoing love affair with social media among the youth of the country, many of those in the older generation still struggle to grasp the technology.
The `Interactive Seminar Series: Social Media for Parents’ series specifically targets parents, grandparents and guardians to provide them with an insight into social media. Its role in today’s society is so widespread that Facebook and Twitter addresses are now standard inclusions for business card printing.
The tri-workshop event will seek to increase parents’ confidence, skills and awareness in the medium while at the same time teaching them key safety tips to keep children safe online.
Participants may choose to attend one or all three of the workshops, which begin on January 16 with an introductory `Social Media Overview’ to introduce the basic concepts and to examine the associated risks and benefits.
On January 23, the workshop will focus on safety and privacy along with digital reputation. Other areas of interest will include the permanent nature of online content, risks of public profiles, digital `stalking’ and the digital footprint’s impact on employment and academic prospects.
The final workshop on January 30 will look into the negative and positive effects of social sites.
