Pilot programme targets small business

Small businesses in Welshpool and throughout the City of Canning are set to benefit from a new pilot programme being undertaken within the city.

Mayor Paul Ng said that the City of Canning had joined with the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) in the pilot, which focuses on improving processes involved in health, building and planning approvals, adding:

“Small business is big business for Canning. By being a facilitator rather than a regulator, the opportunities we expect to identify will bolster our already thriving local economy and business environment.

Both the SBDC and City of Canning are actively engaged in supporting small business within their individual communities through the Small Business Friendly initiative for Local Government. It follows a similar initiative carried out in Victoria which resulted in faster approval times for small businesses. Local authorities can use Print shops to help create informative materials about schemes such as this to pass to relevant organisations.

The Mayor said that the collaborative and innovative project provides input to the ‘Welcoming and Thriving’ strategic vision of the city and it will also help to establish an environment that was more enabling for small business, which was such an important part of the local community.

He said the pilot programme, together with the SBDC’s support and feedback from small businesses, would also assist the city to identify key areas where improvements could be most effective.
