Panel holds first meeting to discuss museum ideas

Ideas and interesting stories flowed when the recently formed community panel for a new museum in the Perth Cultural Centre met for the first time during May.

Sixty community members were selected to take part and help plan design elements and proposed museum experiences.

As part of the $428m project, work is already underway on the refurbishment of the WA Museum's research and storage facility in Welshpool, Western Australia, and the state government also set a January 28th, 2015 deadline for expressions of interest from local and international contractors to design and build the new complex.

WA Museum Director Alec Coles said the successful contractor was expected to be appointed by the end of this year.

Coles said the community panel was an important part of the process. It included a People's Panel made up of representatives with diverse interests and backgrounds, as well as three specialist panels that would concentrate on areas such as teachers and educators, children and young people, and accessibility and inclusion.

Panel members, he said, would also have a chance to explore behind the scenes and learn more about the museum's programmes and collections.

Work at the Welshpool site will involve an upgrade programme to provide for additional preparation and storage areas.

Due for completion in 2020, the new museum to be woven in and around heritage buildings at the Perth Cultural Centre.
