New skate park set for June 2021

Welshpool skateboarders, cyclists and scooter riders will be able to put their skills to the test from mid-2021 at a brand new purpose-built facility to be established within the Willetton Sports Precinct.

The final design of the skate plaza, which is to be fully integrated within its surroundings, has been completed following community consultation on the initial concept. Features include landscaping, paved surfaces and street-inspired skating obstacles such as curbs, handrails and stairs.

Outdoor furniture, trees and garden beds are also included in the final design, along with a circular flat rail and extra turning space for BMX and scooter riders.

Pedestrian safety will of upmost importance when the existing skate park is removed and Burrendah Boulevard is upgraded, which is expected to take place in February 2021. To this end, street lighting will be boosted, footpaths widened and a cycle path and designated crossing points for pedestrians created.

Community members are often made aware of major works such as this via strategic flyer printing campaigns.

According to Mayor Patrick Hall, the skate plaza represents a “first” in the state, not just Canning, and he added:

“This facility will strongly diversify the skate terrain on offer in the metropolitan area and I’m sure it will become a huge drawcard in attracting people to using our recreational spaces in the City.”

Work on the skate park is expected to be completed by June 2021.
