New scheme set up to facilitate volunteering opportunities

Volunteering for Welshpool residents just became a little easier following the introduction of the Canning Volunteer Gateway.

Volunteering WA and the City of Canning came up with the initiative to help connect people within the community to individual voluntary opportunities.

City of Canning Mayor Paul Ng said the service has been set up to provide ideas and assistance to community members, complete with full colour Brochures, Flyers and other information.

The Canning Volunteer Gateway is situated inside the Riverton Library.

Mayor Ng said Volunteering WA staff will man the desk twice a week to help match the individual skills of community volunteers to organisations and charities where they are most needed.

He said there will also be an opportunity for those participating to learn new skills in specific areas of interest.

In addition to the Gateway, members of the community will be invited to take part in regular workshops entitled ‘Step into Volunteering’ to be held at the Riverton Library.

Mayor Ng said the sessions will give people a taste of what to expect when volunteering and to discover the extent of opportunities available and which ones might be best suited to their skills and interests.

He said statistics have revealed that in the age group 18 and over, more than one-fifth of the population participate in formal volunteering. This includes unpaid help using people’s skills, service and time.
