New city initiative to help boost jobseeker skills

A new City of Canning Work Ready programme is aiming to help jobseekers in Welshpool and across the city to develop skills to make finding work much easier.

Launched recently, the programme, which is one of the city's COVID-19 projects to help towards recovery, will involve volunteers such as Blaise Kost and Farida Nizamuddin, who are contributing their time and skills into connecting participants with job advice and support.

Nizamuddin, a marketing and HR professional, is keen to put her digital literacy, communication and job coaching skills to good use at the Work Ready Hub. Riverton's Kost attends Notre Dame University, where he studies health promotions and is a large advocate of volunteering, which he says is deeply rewarding.

The issue of unemployment has been identified as an area of concern within the community of Canning, according to Mayor Patrick Hall, who said the latest initiative will assist in reducing any social consequences of unemployment and job loss. He added:

“It’s a wonderful initiative designed for those wanting to connect with employment services and identify additional support that best meet their needs. Work Ready can equip them with practical skills to improve or open doors to job opportunities.”

Flyer printing campaigns have often helped to spread the word about beneficial community programmes such as the Work Ready initiative.

As part of the programme, a number of workshops covering topics like CV writing and video conferencing will also be available.
