Local river forms backdrop for Reconciliation Week

The City of Canning, which encompasses Welshpool, will join with Sister Kate’s Home Kids Aboriginal Corporation in marking Reconciliation Week with an educational and active family walk throughout the Canning River Regional Park.

The 4-kilometre walk will follow a picturesque loop that is popular with cyclists and walkers alike and is dog, pram and wheelchair friendly. In addition to taking in the scenery of the river body, known as Djarlgarro Beeliar, participants will enjoy a Welcome to Country and a Smoking Ceremony, and they will learn more about indigenous stories pertaining to the area. Community events like this can be effectively promoted through flyer printing.

National Reconciliation Week takes place from the 27 May to 3 June each year. The dates mark two significant events in the history of the reconciliation journey in Australia. The river parkland Forms part of the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people. In inviting the public to the celebration, the City of Canning has extended an Acknowledgement of Country, saying:

“We would like to acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation as the traditional custodians of the land and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.”

The walk will take place from 8:30am to noon on 30 May from Kent Street Weir Park in Wilson. Enclosed shoes, warm clothes and a reusable water bottle and coffee cup are recommended by organisers.
