A popular activities and picnic spot near Welshpool, Western Australia, is set for a major refurbishment.
The upgrade of the Kent Street Weir in early 2017 is expected to add 50 years to the popular site’s life, according to Swan Avon region manager Don Cummins.
Mr Cummins said the Department of Water has awarded the contract to construct and design the weir to Ertech, adding that the work is to include automated weir gates and a fishway plus a refurbished walkway for use by cyclists, pedestrians and others.
The expected time frame for the upgrade is four to six months with the Department of Water managing the project in conjunction with the City of Canning and Department of Parks and Wildlife.
Mr Cummins emphasised that the works will improve safety at the weir for all users and have the long term effect of extending its life by an estimated half a century.
In an effort to keep everyone informed, a graphic design of the upgrade works and the schedule are expected to be uploaded to the department’s webpage as soon as they are finalised, he said.
Notification in writing on department Letterheads will also be circulated to residents to ensure they are aware of the works.
Mr Cummins said that during the upgrade which is expected to begin in February, access to the other side of the river will be available via a temporary bridge.
