Gallery exhibits documents dating back to Australias federation

Documents dating back to when Australia was declared a Commonwealth in 1901 are on show in a special exhibition at

Federation Gallery.

The gallery is located in the National Archives building in East Victoria Park, near Welshpool, Western Australia.

Described as `birth certificates of our nation’, the documents are significant because they record and relate to Australia being proclaimed a Commonwealth.

On show is the original Constitution Act which was dated 9th July, 1900, and signed by Queen Victoria after it was passed by the Royal Commission of Assent and the British Parliament.

Later changes to the nation’s constitution are also recorded in the exhibit.

Keeping the original Copies intact for the benefit of future generations is a vital part of the work done at Federation Gallery, and maintaining public access to view the documents is also important.

New technology has enabled the facility to measure light and its impact on the historic documents. As a result, the gallery staggers its opening days and times to lessen the effect on the exhibits, while still providing access to the public.

The opening times are listed on all advertising materials produced for the venue by brochure and flyer printers.

For those keen to take a look back in time at these historic documents, the next viewing is available from 27th May to 7th June, 2014. Group and school bookings are welcome.
