Community celebrates citys natural waterway

The recent Blessing of the River Eco Fair attracted community members from throughout the City of Canning, including Welshpool, Western Australia.

The event took place at the Shelley Beach Foreshore and, according to Deputy Mayor Lindsay Holland, resulted in a great celebration of the natural beauty of the city.

Cr. Holland said the existence of an incredible natural waterway in the centre of a major city was a bonus for the Canning community, and provided an ideal place to enjoy life, relax, work and play.

The community rallied to help celebrate the diverse mix of activities on offer in the Swan Canning River Park, with more than 600 people attending the event.

Watersports, which are often featured on promotional Brochures and postcard printing in the area, were on offer throughout the celebration and allowed community members to experience everything from canoeing to dragon boat racing.

In addition, attendees were able to browse arts and crafts, sustainable living and environmental stalls, healthy food choices, and various activities staged particularly for children to enjoy.

Holland said the wide range of activities available on the day also included entertainment and rides, Riverwise gardening products and tips, textile painting and a rare opportunity to explore science of the river through the Sci-tech mobile theatre.

No Blessing of the River ceremony would be complete without the Welcome to Country ceremony, which was conducted by Marie Taylor, who is an elder of the Noongar tribe.
