Resurfacing work has begun on the track at the Ern Clark Athletic Centre, in preparation for the world championships in 2016.
Top runners from around the globe will converge on the City of Canning in Western Australia, including suburbs such as Welshpool, to take part in the World Masters Athletic event.
The work on the track, according to Commissioner Steven Cole, will ensure it surpasses the high standard required to host such a major episode in the sport’s calendar.
He said having such a high-quality venue to host the championships was great, but it also had many ongoing benefits for regional and local athletes in providing a top class venue at which to compete and train.
Cole said the track resurfacing would cost $900,000 and, when complete, would illustrate the quality of facilities available to community members. It would also showcase the local government’s role in hosting and bringing international events to the city.
The commissioner also paid tribute to the $200,000 contribution made by the Sport and Recreation Department, and said investments such as this not only revitalised venues to enable them to host major international meets, but also encouraged residents to participate and become more active in the community.
A May 2015 deadline has been set for completion of the resurfacing works, but the City of Canning is already welcoming track bookings, a fact publicised via flying printing.
